The Manager Communications leads an engaged, high-performing team of advisors and senior advisors to provide strategic communications advice for two key portfolios at the Department of Internal Affairs. This position reports to the General Manager Communications and is part of the Communications Leadership team.

It is our communications business partner for two of the Department's branches (Digital Services including the Government Chief Digital Officer, and Partnerships and Commissions including the National Library and Archives). This provides a rewarding, challenging and varied mix of strategic and operational communications work.

The position is vacant for a fixed-term period from approximately mid-June 2025 until mid-July 2026, due to parental leave. It is a critical and highly valued role for the Department, and we are looking for someone who is already operating at a communications leadership level who can slot into the team seamlessly. To be successful in this role you will preferably have significant proven experience in the following areas:

  • Leading a communications team
  • Building trusted relationships and influencing senior leaders
  • Achieving measurable internal and external communications results
  • Providing strategic advice on complex communications and media issues
  • The public service and political process

**About the Team**

Communications sits within Enterprise Services, a branch dedicated to supporting the rest of the Department to succeed by providing corporate services. The Communications team leads and partners across the Department to deliver impactful internal and external communications that support business outcomes.

They provide strategic communications planning and advice, multimedia content and storytelling support, and risk, reputation and brand management that builds trust and confidence in the work of the Department.
