About the Team/Service We are the Mental Health and Addictions Service arm of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu - Waikato. Puawai Regional Forensic Mental Health Service provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to people who have contact with the justice system and who have a moderate to severe mental illness.Puawai services the Te Manawa Taki region. The inpatient environment includes; Puna Matai (acute), Puna Awhi Rua (sub-acute), Puna Poipoi (rehabilitation) and two transition wards (minimum security), Puna Whiti and Puna Taunaki. Apart from the transition wards all wards are secure.
This service also provides community services to the courts and prisons, and support for tāngata whaiora in a community setting. It provides service to Waikeria, Springhill and Tongariro prisons. The Forensic Service also works closely with the Adult Service to support the transition of tāngata whaiora between the two settings.
