The Canterbury Jockey Club is seeking a creative and motivated Head Chef to oversee culinary operations for our race day operations and function centre. As our Head Chef, you will play a key role in ensuring smooth running of events/race meetings and elevating client/guest experiences.

Who we are:

Operating as the Canterbury Jockey Club and Riccarton Park Function Centre no two days are the same.

For 170 years the Canterbury Jockey Club has been at the forefront of New Zealand racing. We are home to 31 race days a year with New Zealand Cup Week being a highlight on everyone's social calendars. Catering to our attendees through a variety of different catering styles there is something for everyone to enjoy while experiencing the thrill of racing.

Our versatile function centre caters to an extensive range of events from conferences to weddings and everything in between. With hospitality options for every occasion, we offer an unforgettable experience to all.

We are on the lookout for an experienced and passionate Head Chef to lead our kitchen team from strength to strength. If you are dedicated to crafting innovative menus, optimising profitability, and ensuring customer satisfaction then we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and design innovative menus that reflect seasonal produce and current food trends
  • Manage food costing and pricing strategies to ensure profitability while maintaining quality
  • Oversee kitchen operations, ensuring that food preparation and presentation meet our high standards
  • Maintain establishment operating standards
  • Train, mentor, and lead a team of kitchen staff, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence
  • Continuously improve the skills, knowledge and morale of all employees.
  • Maintain health and safety standards and ensure compliance with hygiene regulations
  • Collaborate with front of house and management to ensure seamless service
  • Be fully aware of trends in the industry and make suggestions for improvement
  • Look for opportunities to improve procedures and make suggestions for improvements where appropriate

What We're Looking For:

Proven experience as a Head Chef or in a similar role

Strong skills in menu design, food costing, and kitchen management

Passion for the culinary excellence and a drive for continuous improvement

Excellent leadership and communication skills

Ability to thrive in varied environment while maintaining a positive and motivating atmosphere
