When nature thrives, we all thrive.He angitūtanga | About the roleTechnical Advisors at DOC support business groups and external conservation partners by leading the provision of strategic and technical expertise, with work spanning a broad geographical area.This opportunity is for someone interested in conservation management to provide strategic and technical support about fauna management conservation to the DOC Operations teams across the country, to the Permissions processes and to the Terrestrial Biodiversity Unit Leadership TeamWe are looking for two advisors with a mix of lizard and bird conservation knowledge that have strong relationship building skills, are effective communicators and influencers, and who have inclusive approach to their work.

As the Technical Advisor, Fauna, you will:Have a strong interest in conservation management with the ability to provide strategic and technical support for indigenous terrestrial fauna management to the DOC Operations teamsProvide quality advice on the management and monitoring of terrestrial fauna.Provide advice on concessions, Fast Track applications and permits issued by DOC and this includes an assessment of values and impacts on these values.

You may also be required to act as an expert witness for resource management applications (including Regional and District Plan reviews).Have opportunities to support other technical and strategic biodiversity projects led by the Terrestrial Biodiversity Unit and contributions to research and systems improvement will be possible.Please note: We encourage interest from all locations, but this role is preferably based in any of our offices located in Whangarei, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Hokitika or Christchurch.

Any other locations are by negotiation.

Equipped with strong verbal and written communication skills, you enjoy collaborating with a wide range of people.Desirable skills, experience, and qualifications include:Experience in supporting project delivery and giving technical advice and guidance to field staff on terrestrial fauna.Ability to provide advice on applications to undertake activities that might affect terrestrial fauna valuesA demonstrated track record of working with others and building productive and collaborative relationshipsAbility to use initiative and independent judgement especially with critical tasksAbility to plan and organise work and meet deadlines as appropriate.Current, full New Zealand Drivers Licence and ability to travel as and when required.Tertiary qualification in a related field and/or relevant experience is desirable.
