About the Role

With 14 Intensive Care Specialists combining qualifications in Intensive Care, Retrieval Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery and Trauma Surgery you will gain world class experience with varied case mixes and a high level of medical education, training and supervision.

With College of Intensive Care Medicine part I and part II examiners there can be a focussed education package to meet the needs of trainees. There is also the opportunity to fulfil CICM echocardiography training requirements. Paediatric case numbers fulfil the criteria for CICM Paediatric ICU Training.

There is an active research department with Specialists able to guide progression through audit and quality or research requirements if required.

In addition to the experiences above we provide an active specialist led education programme with protected teaching time to enable participation. The efforts of the educational enthusiasts amongst the SMO receives regular positive feedback from the participants.

You will also have the opportunity to educate your peers as well as the Otago University Trainee Intern Medical Students that rotate through the unit.

Our new Intensive Care facility opened in 2021, meaning there has never been a better time to consider a career with Waitaha Canterbury. Critical care experience awaits you, encompassing the spectrum of tertiary care for adults and selected paediatric specialties in the South Island of New Zealand.

Participate and gain a breadth of experience across critical care. We care for patients requiring Intensive Care all specialties including Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgical. Christchurch Hospital also provides regional care for trauma, burns, paediatric oncology, paediatric surgery, South Island neurosurgery, interventional radiology.

In addition, we are one of two Spinal Injury units for New Zealand and likewise one of two hyperbaric units for New Zealand. We can also provide an anaesthesia rotation progressing from SHO to Registrar covering 12 months for Intensive Care Trainees requiring completion of their anaesthesia training.

In addition to working on ICU there is the opportunity to participate in a busy road, rotary and fixed wing inter hospital retrieval service covering commonly the South Island (including the Chatham Islands) but with a reach for subspecialty transfers into the North Island as far north as Auckland.

Christchurch - s Intensive Care adopted the care for deteriorating patients early in the evolution of rapid response systems and has a dedicated nurse and doctor deteriorating patient response team 24 hours a day.

About You
  • PGY4+ with experience in Critical Care
  • Airway management experience is desirable
  • Knowledge and commitment of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how the principles can be applied to health.
  • A willingness to grow and further develop an equity lens and skillset, both to assist Maori and minority groups.
  • You must be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility by visiting the Council - s website at www.mcnz.org.nz
